Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, Zakir Hussain, KM Birla and Sudha Murty are among 106 Padma Award recipients this year. Of the total 106, 6 are Padma Vibhushan awardees, 9 Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri.

Known as the highest civilian awards in India, the President conferred the honour in three categories - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The awards are being given in various disciplines and fields of activities like art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service, among others.
The list comprises six Padma Vibhushan, nine Padma Bhushan and 91 Padma Shri Awards. 19 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 2 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI (Non Resident Indian)/PIO (Person of Indian Origin)/OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) and seven posthumous (मरणोपरांत) awardees.
"Padma Vibhushan" is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; "Padma Bhushan" for distinguished service of high order and "Padma Shri" for distinguished service in any field.

"Padma Vibhushan" is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service. "पद्म विभूषण" असाधारण और विशिष्ट सेवा के लिए प्रदान किया जाता है।
Three out of the six Padma Vibhushan Awards were posthumous - Balkrishna Doshi (Architecture), Mulayam Singh Yadav (Public Affairs) and Dilip Mahalanabis (Medicine).
The other Padma Vibhushan recipients were Zakir Hussain (Art), SM Krishna (Public Affairs) and Srinivas Varadhan (Science & Engineering).

Padma Bhushan 2023
Padma Bhushan is conferred for distinguished service of a high order.
Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla, who is the fourth recipient of the Padma award in the Birla Family.
Before Kumar Mangalam Birla, his mother Rajashree Birla was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2011. According to reports, his extended family member Ganga Prasad Birla and great grandfather Ghanshyam Das Birla were recipients of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, respectively.
An author, educator, and motivational speaker, Sudha Murty, was also honoured with the Padma Bhushan for her contribution to the field of social work. Kannada novelist-screenwriter SL Bhyrappa was also among the recipients of this prestigious award for his illustrious career in the field of literature.
Indian playback singer Vani Jairam was honoured for her contribution to music.
Indian linguistic scholar and former JNU pro-vice-chancellor, Kapil Kapoor, was also among the list of Padma Bhushan winners for his extensive work in the field of Indian intellectual traditions.
Playback singer Suman Kalyanpur also received the award for her contribution to art.

Padma Shri :- "Padma Shri" for distinguished service in their respective field.
After making India proud on the international stage, Telugu maestro MM Keeravani was honoured with a Padma Shri award for his contribution in the field of art. This is the latest feather in the cap of the master composer who recently bagged an Oscar as well as a Golden Globe for the global chartbuster "Naatu Naatu".
Bollywood diva Raveena Tandon was among the list of recipients of Padma Shri winners in the field of art.

PADMA AWARDS :- The Padma Awards are one of the highest civilian honours of India announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. The Awards are given in three categories :- Padma Vibhushan (for exceptional and distinguished service), Padma Bhushan (distinguished service of higher order) and Padma Shri (distinguished service). The award seeks to recognize achievements in all fields of activities or disciplines where an element of public service is involved.
The Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted by the Prime Minister every year. The nomination process is open to the public. Even self-nomination can be made.
HISTORY AND RELEVANCE :- The Government of India instituted two civilian awards-Bharat Ratna & Padma Vibhushan in 1954. The latter had three classes namely Pahela Varg, Dusra Varg and Tisra Varg. These were subsequently renamed as Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri vide Presidential Notification issued on January 8, 1955.
BHARAT RATNA :- Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour. It is treated on a different footing from Padma Award. The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President of India. No formal recommendations for Bharat Ratna are necessary. The number of Bharat Ratna Awards is restricted to a maximum of three in a particular year. As of 31st March 2023, Government has conferred Bharat Ratna Award on 48 persons till date.
PADMA AWARDS :- Padma Awards, which were instituted in the year 1954, is announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day except for brief interruption(s) during the years 1978 and 1979 and 1993 to 1997.
The award is given in three categories, namely,
:- Padma Vibhushan for exceptional and distinguished service;
:- Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order; and
:- Padma Shri for distinguished service.
